Notes

The mudi gained recognition in the 1900's, when the hungarian dogs were divided into breeds for the first time. It is believed to originate from crosses between pumi, puli and possibly some sort of spitz. Some point to scandinavian spitzes, others to the german. The mudi does resemble a Sami herding dog, and just like them it may be born with a natural bobtail (a trait not found in the german spitzes or the puli, but in many scandinavian spitzes, such as the lapphunds).

The mudi was recognized in 1936. It was named by Dezso FĂ©nyesi, who was the first person that described the breed. 'Mudi' is not said to mean anything special.
The mudi is kept as herding dog for sheep, pigs and cattle. It is also an allround farmdog and a good ratter.

The mudi should have an elongated head with straight muzzle and slight stop. The ears are set high, erect and pointy. The neck is set high on the body, muscular and slightly arched. The body has a short, straight back with oval chest and marked tuck up. The coat is wavy or curly, except on the head where it is smooth.
