The swedish vallhund, also known as västgötaspets ("Spitz of Västergötland", a county in southern Sweden) is an ancient genuine swedish herding dog (vallhund being swedish for "herding dog"). It lived as an allround farmdog for centuries, and breeders had only three criteria that the dog had to follow:
-The dog had to herd the farm's cattle
-It should look like grandfather's dog
-It had to guard the farm and look after intruders
If the dog did not live up to these expectations, it was promptly put to sleep. The dogs were considered a working tool and there was no place for sentimentality.
The swedish vallhund almost disappeared forever, but was saved in the 1940s by cynologist Björn von Rosen.
The swedish vallhund should have a rather long and dry head, with a clear stop and clearly cut muzzle. The ears are of medium size, pointed and erect. The neck is long, powerful and carried high. The body should be slighty rectangular, with straight, short back and long, deep chest. Slight tuck up. Good angulation in front and hind legs, with heavy boning. The tail can be long or naturally bobbed. The coat consists of a short, thick undercoat and half long, hard and close-laying topcoat.
