Notes
The golden retriever originates from british gundogs, the dogs of Lord Tweedmouth being among the most famous. These are said to have been yellow puppies born in otherwise black-coated wavy coated retriever (today's flat coated retriever) litters. In 1868 a so-called Tweed-water spaniel was bred with Nous, one of the Tweedmouth dogs, and the four yellow puppies that were born are said to be the original golden retrievers. It wasn't until 1919 that the golden gained status as an indendent breed, before that it was registered as a wavy or flat coat retriever.
The golden retriever should appear well balanced, powerful and active with a friendly disposition and expression. The head is broad but not coarse, with a broad and deep muzzle, about the same length as the muzzle The ears are of medium size and set at the height of the eyes. The body is balanced with a compact, deep and long chest and straight topline. Straight front legs and well angulated hind. The tail should preferably be carried at the height of the backline. The coat is smooth or wavy with a good amount of feathering.
