Notes

The wetterhoun is a very typical European water dog. It looks very similar to the now extinct english water dog, but most likely originates from Friesland, the Netherlands, and is believed to be related to the Irish Water Spaniel as well as the Curly Coated Retriever. It is known for being extremely stubborn, and is an excellent watchdog. It was previously kept as an otter hunter, but today it serves as a bird dog.

The Wetterhoun was recognized by the Dutch Kennel Club, Rad van Beheer, in the 1942 with only twenty dogs registered in total. The breed very rare in the rest of the world and uncommon in Holland, but a Wetterhoun was exported to Sweden in the 1950's.

The Wetterhoun should be a medium sized, powerful and compact breed. The head is rather large, powerful and dry, with the skull and muzzle the same length. The stop is slight, with the muzzle shaped powerful and rounded. The ears are of medium size, spoon-shaped and set low. The coat on them is a breed trademark; wavy, rather long and shorter at the tips. The neck is short, round and powerful, carrying the head low. The body is very powerful, with a deep chest, slight tuck up and straight back. Straight frontlegs, good angulation in hind. The tail is set at medium height, carried curved over the back in a fashion that is a breed trademark. The coat is rather thick and oily to the touch, with the whole body covered in thick locks.
