Notes

The american cocker spaniel originates from the same dogs as the english cocker, but was bred for a more showy look. One of the most important dogs that formed the breed was Obo II, who was imported to the USA in the late 1800's. The american cocker was entered in its first show in Massachusetts in 1878. It wasn't until 1945 that the cockers were divided into two breeds.

In the USA, this variety is called cocker spaniel, and the british has 'english' before its name, but in the rest of the world the british type is 'cocker spaniel' while the american has its home country before its name. In Petz, to avoid confusion, this breed is always registered as 'American cocker spaniel'.

The american cocker spaniel should appear as a small, compact and agile dog. The skull is rounded with marked eyebrows and broad muzzle. The ears are set low, thin and long enough to reach to the tip of the nose if stretched out. The neck is long, dry and slightly arched. The body is short, compact and slightly rectangular. The tail should be carried as a natural extension of the back. The coat is long, silky, straight or slightly wavy.
