On the most basic of levels, Juniper is a name taken directly from the type of tree common in England. Less superficially, juniper berries were a key ingredient in the making of gin, an alcoholic drink that was renowned in 18th century England for its power to warm the body. The widespread consumption of gin initiated a ribald period in English history known as "the Gin Craze". Juniper honors this instability by bearing a show name filched from one of the poems of Charles Baudelaire, who is generally regarded as the greatest of the 19th century French poets.
